Installing Smith.ai Web Chat on a WordPress Website

To install the Smith.ai Chat widget on your WordPress site

Sign in to WordPress

  1. Sign in to your WordPress admin panel (usually a url that ends in /wp-admin/ on your website)

Find the location to put it

Ok, this is where things can be a bit tricky. In our experience, it can be go one of three locations — but as Lorenzo, our lead engineer puts it, "WordPress is the Wild West. Who knows where you'll find it." So, here are the three likely spots:

  • Your theme has an editable footer that allows you to edit and insert code (most common)
  • Your theme has an editable main page template that allows you to edit and insert code
  • Your theme has a configurable footer that allows you to inject code (unlikely)

We'll now dig in to each example. If it's not one of these, or you are having trouble, please contact your web developer.

  1. Find your footer template (Usually a path that looks like this: /wp-admin/theme-editor.php?file=footer.php). You can usually find it under Appearance -> Editor
  2. Scroll down in the Footer template to the last empty space before the closing </body> tag
  3. Get the embed code from your Live Chat dashboard
  4. Copy the code by pressing the "copy" b
    utton
  5. Paste it into the blank area in the footer template
  6. Press "Update File"
  7. Your chat widget should now be live on your website
Editable Main Page Template in the theme

Follow the instructions above for the footer template, only in the absence of a footer.php or similar footer file, find the index.php or page.php main template.

If your theme has a configurable footer that allows you to insert code, you'll find it in Appearance -> Themes -> Customize. It's unlikely, but some have it. So, check out Customize and see if there is a Footer element, or any similar place to put a chunk of HTML code.

  1. Get the embed code from your Live Chat dashboard
  2. Copy the code by pressing the "copy" button
  3. Paste it into wherever the template allows
  4. Save and view your site.
